Snowmobile underwater in Belgrade Stream
On January 18, 2018, two young men riding a snowmobile fell into Belgrade Stream. You can read more about that story here. Walking on the ice while traveling with a group of first responders is one thing. You still, almost, have that warm and fuzzy feeling inside. But what happens if the ice cracks? Will they be able to grab me before the current pulls me under? Will I remain calm enough to get back on top of the ice and survive the cold threat? After surveying the scene with our flight assistant Percy Carey, 18 of Belgrade, I had some second thoughts about what this young pair of teens must have gone through in order to survive. Their story did not include trained, life-saving professionals. Their story included the darkness of night. Disorientation. Wilderness. Hypothermia. The channel of Belgrade Stream. Luck. Skill. And in the end they had the assistance of a team of local heroes.
The raw footage included in the link has not been edited or cut but reflects the data captured of the scene on a well lighted winter morning two days after the boys’ near miss. This was a close call and would recommend that anyone traveling in the winter in Maine could use any advantage for survival.
It’s when we stop paying attention that things go wrong. That moment when we disengage from the day to day steadiness and willingly step foot into recreation mode is when we need it most – the ability to understand and minimize risk while recreating. To live and recreate another day.

While we also enjoy these activities we wish to promote the safety and well-being of all involved in these outdoing affairs. At this point we will account for the families, offspring, other loved-ones, friends, municipal and state officials, and others while committing to our recreational life styling here in Maine.
